Made some mini apple tarts yesterday.
This crispy cookie crust doesn't really go too well with apply fillings but since I had this crust sitting in the fridge for a week I just gave it a try.
Turned out alright. Glad that I made them minis though. But to tell you the truth, it's really a pain to make mini tarts! But they look cute so no complain. (^^)
How to make them? Too easy!
Butter¡¡125g¡¡¡Êroom temp¡Ë
icing sugar¡¡100g¡¡¡Êsifted¡Ë
egg¡¡¡¡¡¡50g¡¡¡Êroom temp¡Ë
salt¡¡¡¡¡¡1 pinch
all purpose flour¡¡250g¡¡¡Êsifted¡Ë
¡Make sure butter is soft, mix in icing sugar, then slowly add in egg. Add salt, then remove egg beater.
¢Use hand or a card to cut flour into butter mixture in bowl. Don't over mix creating too much glutein.
£Done when it forms a dough. Wrap it or put in plastic bag and let rest in refridgerator for at least 30 minutes.
¢¨You can make it days before you need it.
Filling:
Peeled and sliced apples x5 (I think people like using grandy smith and macantosh or something like that)
Water 1/4 cup
Brown sugar 2tbsp
Cinnamon powder
Ginger powder
Fry apple slices in fry pan, add water and other ingridients and let simmer until soft.
Putting it together:
¡Simply roll out 1/2 of the dough to approx. 2mm thick. Use fork to leave some holes in dough, line pastry into pie case (small or large) and roll out excess pastry with rolling pin. Cover pastry case with cooking paper and add in dried beans or rice. Bake for 9-12 minutes.
¢Remove beans/rice, pour apple fillings and cover with stripes of pastry. Bake for another 12 minutes or until it's golden brown.

I saw this news about Hikaru Utada's mother getting caught at the NY airport for possession to a huge amount of cash (420,000USD!!!) when she entered the country. The US gov't kept the money and put her under investigation and now that it's proven to be clean money she has to go through paper work to get her money back.
As it is unusual to carry such an amount of cash around in North America. I don't think she can really complain about what the US immigration did to her as there are actual written rules on the amount of cash you can bring with you when entering the country.
From this case I think it reveals how cultural difference could lead to unnecessary troubles as such.
The States is a credit card country and people don't usually carry too much cash around (similar in Hong Kong and Canada). But it's totally opposite in Japan.
ATM machines close at certain hours and even when they are in operation their complimentary service is only until around 7pm during weekdays. It's nothing that you could imagine in a financially advanced (you think) country like Japan could have such behind services. But it is true! And since credit card is still not as common you do really need to carry cash with you at all times. (Did you know there are drive-thru ATM in North America?! They are really handy!!)
This is one thing my husband always complains about me. That I keep too little cash in my wallet. I'm still adjusting to it slowly.

Was reading other blogs and found this site of ¤ß¤ó¤ê¤ó¤µ¤ó's. The Orange Maple twist she made looks so delicious!! Just so happened I made some mini buns and didn't turn out how I wanted them, guess I just need to practice more to understand how my bread maker can do for me.
Now I so want to try making this bread she made. Just have to wait till I finish all the buns I made yesterday though.

English version:
Been eating out a lot these days. Felt bad so I tried to make up by cooking dinner at home.
Hubbie is not too picky on food but I am trying to make something new every time.
I try my best to include soup, rice, vegetable dish and a meat entree in our meals. But of course things don't always go so smooth. We would end up having just simple stuffs when I get lazy.
This is what I made the other night.
Fried nagaimo and mixed vegetable salad
Chinese style drumsticks and potato stew
White radish in Japanese clear soup
Nothing fancy really, as I'm not like an iron chef. But I usually don't use soup stock in my cooking. As Japanese is so used to using ready made soup stock I actually use it sometimes when I run out of fresh ones. But since I react on it (can't sleep well but at the same time gets very tired) I stopped using it.
I dunno if you'd be interested to find out how to make these simple dishes, but if yes, just let me know by leaving a comment at the end of this entry.

Robata bar and grill!!! What a wonderful place!
I've actually tried a couple times but the line up was so long I never got in. But I finally conquered it last night!!!!
With an amazing price of 300yen / dish (except selected items) it's a really good place to hang out. Though they have this 2 hour time limit they won't kick you out if there is nobody waiting outside.
All the seafood I had reminded me of Hong Kong. But I must tell you this place is no less than that!
Their grill scallop with soy sauce and butter was just delicious!!! Picky me wanted to re-order but it was already sold out!!! Bacon wrap with sticky rice and chesse was crispy outside and chewy inside. What more can you expect from something like this?!
Oh and more! Grilled sazae, mini geoduck, tiger prawns, deep fried mix veggetables...etc. You name it, all really mouth watering!!
Drinks were good too. No thinning on the alchohol like other restaurants. I especially liked the yuzu honey chu-hi I had.
Had all that, we only paid 3000yen+ / head!! Can't beat that!
Whoever coming for a visit I'm gonna bring you there!!! (^^)b

I was in Kyoto for some important matters and happened to walk by this omlette rice cafe that I've heard all about of from my friends.
Turned out to be a wonderful experience!
If you don't know what omlette rice is, it's fried rice wrapped in omlette. It's good if the egg is not over done and the rice is not dry.
We ordered a hayashi om-rice (om-rice topped with beef stew sauce) and habbie ordered mentaiko om-rice (om-rice with mentaiko fried rice topped with a light cream sauce).
The egg was done to its perfect condition, not too dry and a bit juicy inside. And the rice was great as well. They added a bit of barley in their rice making the texture softer and more healthy.
The mentaiko om-rice was great too! They used a lot of mentaiko in their fried rice making it very yummy. And the cream sauce balanced well with the strong flavor of the rice, soothing your tongue.
Love the plate they used too. Very good presentation and food was delicious.
Size wise, it's fairly big. Even the European guy sitting beside me couldn't finish his tofu om-rice. Not because of the taste but cuz' of the portion. (Since it locates near Kinkakuji and Ritsumeikan University, it is not rare to see foreigners walking in and out of this small restaurant)
It's not cheap for lunch (approx. 900yen+) but definitely worth trying.

Okay so you are thinking why I'm posting a picture of this ordinary Old Dutch chips here.
Little you know it's not commonly available in Japan so I actually brought back a huge bag of it from Vancouver.
Took us only 2 to 3 days to finish munching on them. Lucky I didn't end up with any cold sore.
Still remember how I thought it was too thick for potato chips when I had it for the first time. Being used to the paper thin potato chips in Asia I didn't like the Canadian (North American) style chips. But now that I can only get access to the regular thin chips I long for thicker texture.
Especially like this flavor!!!

This famous French patissier was invited to come to Japan after the Hansshin earthquake about 11 years ago.
This patissiere is very spacious with a 2 stories high celing. Service was very good and they have a wide selection of cakes and drinks.
Pricy but their cakes and drinks are reasonably sized with high quality.
I liked the idea of this ice-tea soda that I had. Interesting and refreshing at the same time.
Bought some cookies home. All tasted good but not spectacular.

The name says it all, it's a chocolatier. Although I didn't try any of their chocolate.
Rather I tried some chocolate mousse cakes. One with orange mousse and the other with coconut & citrus mousse. Both with raspberry gelee inside.
Since I'm not a big fan of chocolate it was a bit rich for me. But I'm sure chocolate lovers would have loved them.
Jam, cookies, pickles are also available in the shop.
Worth a peek.

When we first got into the restaurant it was still quite empty. By the time we left there were people waiting for seats outside.
Food was average but no complain as a spot for daily lunch. Presentation was good if you take a look at the set lunch we ordered.
Nanban chicken lunch came with soup, salad, rice or bread, and drink.
Steamer lunch came with salad, a combination of deep fried prawns, teriyaki chicken, beef stir fry, rice, soup, and drink.
Both under 1000yen.
Counter seats by the window would be your best bet if you're there on your own or with a friend. Looking outside gives you some space and private time without having to mind people around you.

Good atmosphere, good food. Except a little bit pricy (Oden daikon for 400yen each pc, plum wine 600yen). Menu selection is acceptable but could be improved. If I remembered correctly it was exactly the same menu when I went with my friend last year. Only ice-cream is available for dessert but I guess it's good to do less than to do things wrong.
Drink menu was not too sophisticated but good enough for a casual gathering.
I really wanted to share with you all more pictures of the food we had but the chef got upset at me taking pictures inside the restaurant so I refrained to do so. But it was a rare direct command that he gave me instead of a more Japanese indirect gesture when he said it so I was pretty surprised and a bit offended.

Sweet Basil is probably the very first authentic Thai restaurant in Japan I've been to. Most of their dishes are very delicious and service was good.
One thing I wish they could improve is their drink menu. Not a very wide selection was available and their cocktails were not that great. I would suggest just go for the very simple stuffs such as beer. Juices would be from canned juice so I don't think people who are used to fresh coconut juice would like the artificial flavor of canned drinks.
But all in all, the atmosphere is great and it is a great restaurant to enjoy some time with friends or even a date (mind you it's not too quiet there).
Make reservation ahead of time to make sure you don't have to wait for your table.

3 layers of dacquoise and raspberry butter cream stacked together with orange peel candy sprinkled on top of each layer of raspberry butter cream.
The first time for me to have dacquoise related cakes outside of Japan. The usual chewy texture was not found in this Canadian version but rather a firm meringue texture was used. Well, they needed to make it firm to support the weight of the 3 layers of butter cream.
I still prefer the traditional chewy texture though.
Inside this famous patisserie you can find mainly rich chocolate cakes and tarts that suit Canadian's sweet tooth. Not too many cakes with fresh cream was found like you would see in Japan.

This Chinese fast food restaurant serves set menu and ramen. Very clean and service is wonderful. I've seen it published in a ramen guide book and have wanted to try it for the longest time. So I ordered ramen set lunch. Came with 2 deep fried chicken pieces, 1 sui mai, and a bowl of rice. All for 500yen.
Considering the price you pay and the quality of their service, it's worth going in for a quick bite.
I could see the owner is a kind hearted person from how he let the part time staff eat during a busy time.

I've been using Cuoca.com when I shop for baking materials. It's pretty good service and prices are not too expensive when you consider the fact that you don't have to travel far to look and bring back heavy items.
Just want to remark on the superb service of the Japanese courier industry. You can set a specific time (2 hours time frame) so you can make sure you'd be home to answer the door.
Oh and they have refrigerated delivery for stuffs that need to be kept at low temperature so you can even shop for ice-cream and seafood through the Internet here.

In brief, food was below average. Service was ok but due to the lack of staffs we never got our service quick enough. Food came in funny order (like rice came right after appetizer...etc.). Corn tea we got was something old enough that it turned sour!
Nobody greet you at the entrance when you leave.
Not recommended.
