This place was a real Shanghais bistro. The fact that they don't even serve tea for free was so Chinese! hahaha
Anyway, I ordered this "Chinese healthy tea" and it was pretty good. At least they would refill hot water for you (they'd better!). And my throat actually got better the next day.
Food was pretty ok, except the size of everything was quite small. The 2 of us (both female) had to add 3 different kinds of buns and pancakes to our order to fill out stomach after noodles and congee.
Out of all the things I had I think I like the spring onion pancake the most. But again it was too tiny so it wasn't too filling.
Oh and the shau lung bao was pretty good too. It's not like some crazy places that would wrap meat in super thick wrappings.
I was thrilled that they actually had ¡ÖÀãºÚÆù»åÌÍ¡×(pickled veggie and pork noodle in soup), something that I love and have missed for a while. Guess I can go back again for it some other day.
Felt good to have Chinese food. I instantly felt like I started to recover from my cold and sore throat. (^^;

I heard about this MOMOTARO Grape on tv earlier this evening.
This is no ordinary grape!!!! It costs more than Cdn$150 for each bunch of it depends on the size and weight.
It is interesting how Japanese people rank food and other things. My friend noticed how they display the sweetness of fruits by the measurement of sugar content. And I am sure I can simply say Japanese people are pretty drawn to these ranking and branding thing. (or should I say Japanese is just too good at marketing?)
If I told you "this water melon is 79% sweet", would you have a clue exactly how sweet it is? Probably easier to just say "this water melon is really sweet!", right?
But how they grade things here in Japan is very unique. And I find it very interesting. But then sometimes the good things are ranked too high meaning they would become too expensive.
I don't know whether I would ever get to taste a grape that's so expensive.

My friend went to Paris last week. Before she left for her trip she mentioned she'd go browse the baking needs shopping area and I asked her to check out the prices of a few things for me.
So today I got my express shopping delivery from her.
In it, there was a box of chocolate macaron and a bag of merangue cookies. The macaron are from Jean-Paul Hevin, a very famous chocolatier. There are actually a few shops in Japan but I got to try the real French touch of it. You know, Japanese tend to make things too fancy they lose the rough side of things. It's good to be fine but sometimes it's good to make things more down to earth.
I tried one chocolate macaron and it was really yummy. Not too sweet and despite they've been sitting in a box for a couple days they are still very good. And the macaron itself has not gone soft yet. Delicious! (^^)b
Other than these sweets I also got 2 sets of Matfer cookie cutters in the mail. These cookie cutters are good for making more than just pies and cookies. Have wanted them for a long time but the prices in Japan are too high. The straight ones cost more than Cdn$120 while the trimmed ones cost Cdn$150+!!!

I'm sure my friend's made sure the prices were much lower than our target prices. Am so happy I finally can include them in my baking gear! And I'm sure they will last me a lifetime!
Thanks Asako!

Ran out of bread and thought I better use the maple flavored sheet I got from Cuoca the other day.
So I made this maple twist for tomorrow's breakfast. Maple smells really good when it was baking. But I think it is a little bit too sweet. Though hubby loves it.
Maybe I'll try to make my own maple sheet next time.

Tuna Tartar
Went to the super market and saw tuna sashimi on sale. Got a block of it for 250yen and thought maybe I could try something new.
So here it is, my very first tuna tartar!

I didn't follow this recipe completely. Rather, I just chopped it and mixed it with onion (would have been better with shallot but didn't have any), wasabi, soy sauce, salt and pepper. Lime juice to be used right before eating.
I think this whole tartar thing should be eaten with crackers rather than just like that. Well, maybe at least with salad.

It went well with Ritz.

It's getting cold in Osaka. About 8-10 degrees with rain today. Did some laundry and it started raining so they are all hung along the tatami door trim right now. (^^)
On a day like this, something that warms us up would be ideal. So I made this steam rice with chicken and mushrooms. Too bad I didn't have chinese sausage at home, otherwise it'd have made it complete.
It's so easy to make it when you have a rice cooker at home. Simply put everything in the rice cooker and put chicken 15 minutes later.

Perfect choice for a cold day like today.

Got a picture email from a friend the other day. It was all in French (yeah my friend is French) so I had no idea what it was all about. But then when I saw this picture of a tiny little baby girl I understood the whole thing. My friend is now a father!!!!
Oh wow, so many babies this year! At least 3 babies were born among my good friends. And my best friend's baby boy is turning 1 in 2 weeks. 3-4 babies are expected to be born early next year in Canada, Hong Kong and Japan. What a baby boom!
Come to think of it, maybe it's time for me to plan a bit so that my baby won't be too many years younger than my friends'. You know, so that they can all hang out when the mothers and fathers go hang out. hahahaaa
In our case, our baby will be a "mix"! Right, a mix! Most people think mix babies usually turn out to be very cute and eventually beautiful and handsome. But the truth is, my sister has actually met a Chinese Canadian mix in her class and that guy was really unlucky to have got all the worst qualities of both cultures.
He was short, with fair skin, black thin hair, flat nose and small eyes. Poor him.
Hubby and I have had some conversations about having babies in the future. I want a girl but he prefers a boy. Reason is "there are too many perverts out there and I won't want to risk my daughter!!"
But even a guy could turn gay so there really is not guarantee isn't it?!
Too many worries before even getting pregnant.
I wish at least my daughter would have hubby's beautiful eyes so that she can charm all the guys around her with just a blink. hahahhahahaaa

Slept in today. It's a bit cloudy out, feels like a winter day in Vancouver.
Since I have so many frozen veggies in the freezer, I made this Canadian (more like Denny's) breakfast (brunch??) for hubby. I myself had some congee.

Harsh brown with carrots, cherry tomatoes, 1 sunny side up, 2 slices of home made carrot toasts with jam and maple syrup, coffee. Half price on your birthday if you show proper id at the cashier. haahaa
It feels good to have a huge breakfast like this once in a while eh?!

I first learnt about "mukago" (a tiny little potato like vegetable that's grown under the leaves of Japanese yam) last week when I went to Kyoto with my friend.
It looks really cute so I thought I've gotta try it someday. Then yesterday when I was in the department store I ran into it again. Grabbed a box of it without hesitation especially after hubby said he actually likes it.
It's not cheap, cost about 500yen for 80g of it. But I just couldn't resist trying this funny looking thing.
I browsed the Internet a bit to look for ways to cook this mukago thing. And turned out the most common way is to cook it with rice. Some people deep fry or boil them. Then I found an interesting recipe stir frying it.
I borrowed the idea and made it my own version.
Ingredients:
oil
butter
mukago......100g (wash and dry)
garlic......3 cloves minced
parsley
parmesant cheese....1 tbsp
salt and pepper
Simply melt butter in oil in low heat.
Add garlic, fry at low heat for about 1-2 minutes.
Add mukago into fry pan, stir fry for 3-4 minutes. Make sure garlic doesn't get burnt.
Season with salt and pepper.
Turn off heat, add parsley and cheese, mix well.
Ready to serve.
Nice and simple, and the butter goes well with garlic and cheese. Definitely a 2 thumb up dish that goes well with beer!!!
Can actually do the same with potato. But if you can get a hold of mukago, do try it. (^^)b

Went to Umeda with hubby yesterday. On our way home we went to a department store to check out the food market.
Just so happened there were some cheap veggie fair going on so we got some fresh veggies home.
Out of the many things, we got the following items. Each at 210yen / basket.
3 packages of salad veggies
3 bags of mizuna (a Japanese veggie that's available this time of the year. Perfect for Japanese style salad)
3 bags of carrots (with 5 carrots in each bag)
With 630yen we got enough vegetables for the coming 2 weeks or so.
This morning, I decided to cut all carrots and freeze them for later use. So after a couple hours of hard work, the 16 carrots (with 1 from before) are now all in the freezer in different shapes.
Then I went on to cut the potatoes sitting on the shelf too.
Just wish I had a bigger fridge / freezer at home.

Hubby is pretty easy going in terms of food.
He eats basically anything that I'd make at home. But there are a few things that he doesn't like.
Chinese sausage, Taiwanese satay sauce, druken chicken, Chinese congee...etc.
All in all, he doesn't like meat that's sweet or cold. But I don't understand why he likes nikujaga, a Japanese dish that they make the meat sweet.
Things that he loves so much he'd want to eat every time he goes to Hong Kong are durian, Hong Kong style fried crab, fish ball noodle...etc.
And since I told him how to enjoy mango by peeling it and biting it off directly rather than using spoon and knife, he started to like mango too.
But this guy is indeed becoming more picky on Chinese food. With all the good food he's had in Hong Kong he's no longer interested in Chinese food in Japan. Even when he gets to eat at some expensive Chinese restaurant in here, he still wouldn't find them too delicious.
And he is picky on sweets too. Cuz' I brought so many different things home last year he's learnt how to distinguish them. We no longer eat at little cafes anymore (except ones that are very delicious looking).
I'm lucky that he is not picky when he eats at home. And he appreciates whatever I cook. But one problem is he loves deep fried food and tends to eat those when he's at work. (I don't make deep fried food at home). And with that eating habit, he comes home and munched 3 egg tarts after dinner and went to check his weight after.
Who can tell him how to stay slim with a huge appetite like this?!

In respond to a blog friend's diary about egg tart, I finally took some time to try out my recipe at home today. Initially wanting to find out how I can improve the recipe I have, making it more user friendly.
It only takes a few steps making these tarts.
¡¡
¡¡
It is not too difficult to make egg tarts, but it is surprisingly uneasy to make the filling smooth and silky while the crust slightly crispy.

What I realized is, we do need proper mold for egg tarts to make them perfect. The reason is the depth of the mold would affect how the egg mixture gets cooked in the oven. When the mold is too shallow, it gets cooked too soon and forms a thin layer of skin on top. Since it takes time for the crust to get cooked, you don't want that to happen too soon.
Tricky but I tried to make the crust thiner in the regular mini tart molds I have at home. Turned out alright but still, I think steeper molds would be much better.
But since it's my first time making them at home, I would say they turned out pretty well.

Too lazy to write in English last night.
About these books, I got them from a department store yesterday while I was hunting for a birthday present for my mother in law. In fact, I was pretty surprised when I saw this Chinese herbal center in the middle of a department store. A trendy looking place too. So I ended up buying a few of them, both for my mother in law and myself.
Some of you know I usually go to Chinese doctor when I get sick. The reason is mainly because of the allergic reaction I have against western medicines.
When I was a kid, I actually got hospitalized for a couple days after taking some cold medication prescribed by a doctor. It turned out very severe and I was sent to the emergency room then later hospitalized. They couldn't find out what exactly my body reacted to despite the many tests I've done. But at least I know it's something related to cough medicine.
Anyway, back to Chinese herbal things. I have always wanted a book with simple explanations. These recipe books I got was pretty good. I'm sure I'd be able to find some more in Hong Kong at a cheaper price. But as for now, I'll read these ones first.
When I was young, a lot of these concepts didn't really show clearly. But I think a lot of these ideas are very interesting. It's wisdom accumulated over hundreds of years afterall. Why waste them?! (^^)

Those who like Japanese gyoza, I've finally made my first home made gyoza!!! And they turned out great!!!!!!!!! (^^)v
In Japan, people think of gyoza as Chinese food, but somehow we all think it's Japanese. Let's just say it's Japanese-Chinese food.
Somehow Japanese tend to think all Chinese people can make their own gyoza at home. At least I was asked many times when I was studying in Kyoto years ago. I don't know what made them think that but I was pretty shocked when I as asked why I couldn't make gyoza.
Anyway, my first attempt. Japanese style gyoza of course! It's easy cuz' gyoza wrapping is available at most supermarkets.
After wrapping, make sure you dip the bottom of the gyoza with lots of corn starch, then freeze them right away. The corn starch will make them really crispy when you fry them.
When cooking, heat up fry pan before lining frozen gyoza on it. Pour about 80ml water into fry pan and cover. Cook for about 5-8 minutes, remove cover and cook untill all water evaporates. The startch will slowly form a thin crust around the gyoza. Ready for serving when the thin crust turns brown and crispy.
Try and see if it works for you. (~~)b

This is my second attempt. Last week I made the same bread but didn't turn out how I liked it. This time it turned out much better than last time.

The folding part went well and I have my new mold for a loaf. So this time it's a loaf rather than small buns.
I am pretty pleased with it. Any comments?

Cream Stew, a westernized Japanese dish.
It's easy to make it with the instant seasoning packages. But I've never really made it at home.
Last night, I was too fatique to go shopping so I didn't plan to cook anything. Hubby was kind enough to call on his way home and offered to buy ingridients for dinner.
So here it is, something that warms you up in a cold day. And we can keep eating it for 2 days since I probably won't go shopping for a couple days.
I added some fresh cream to make it tastes richer. Along with the carrot, onion, pork, and potato, it's pretty nutritious I suppose...?

Baking needs I ordered through the Internet arrived this afternoon.
This time I got a new kind of flour for bread making. Not sure how it differs from the one I've been using but I'm gonna find out real soon!
On top of that, I also got a can of 300g maccha (green tea) powder. I used up my 30g the other day and thought 300g would last me a long time. Since hubbie loves green tea I can probably use it on many different things. And it's much cheaper to buy bulk.¡¡(it costs more than 700yen for 30g but only 2100yen for 300g!)
With these 2 items I can now make green tea red bean buns again! Hopefully this time would turn out better.

Sick at home (well, I'm home everyday anyway) and having nothing to do, I slept till 4pm after taking some medication.
Feeling a bit tired but thought it would be better to make something than sitting around doing nothing. So I recalled the parsley cookies I saw on TV the other day.
Actually I got some fresh parsley for 100yen the other day. Gotta use it before it rots.
I tried to look for a good recipe on the internet but somehow all parsley cookies recipes I saw on the internet are for pets. I wonder why...
So I kinda created my own based on some basic recipes I have at home. Here is how to make it.
Ingredients:
All purpose flour¡¦¡¦¡¦¡¦30g
Sugar¡¦¡¦¡¦¡¦¡¦75g
Salt¡¦¡¦¡¦¡¦¡¦¡¦1g
Egg white¡¦¡¦¡¦¡¦¡¦60g
Non salted butter¡¦¡¦¡¦¡¦25g
Vanilla Essence
Almond dice (or slice if you have it)¡¦¡¦¡¦¡¦¡¦70g
Fresh parsley¡¦¡¦¡¦¡¦¡¦¡¦about 10g
1) Sift flour, set aside
2) Melt butter
3) In a bowl, mix sifted flour, sugar, and salt
4) Blend parsley and half of the egg white in a mixer
5) Pour 4) and other half of egg white into 3) and mix well
6) Add melted butter to 5) and mix until smooth
7) Add butter to mixture
8) Add almond to 7), let rest at room temperature
9) Preheat oven to 200degrees (Celcius)
10) Drop mixture on buttered baking sheet (or line with non-stick baking paper) and spread it into thin circles with a wet fork (so that mixture won't stick to the fork)
11) Bake until it's slightly brown on the outside. Approximately 10 minutes or so.
12) Remove from baking sheet while it's still hot and soft. Put cookies upside down on a curled mold or flat surface. Let cool.
I personally liked it though I only had 1 so far. Let me know how you like it if you ever try making it. (^^)b

I made "oden" (sorta like a stew in clear soup) for dinner last night. It's easy but quite expensive when you buy it from the store. The weather got cold out of a sudden and I thought something hot for dinner would be appropriate.
It's too easy to make your own "oden". Simply boil daikon, egg, konyaku, and potato first. Then move them into pot of clear soup for about an hour before serving. Remember to use low heat. Some stuffs such as deep fried tofu and fish balls you can add much later.
These are the stuffs I put last night: daikon, egg, konyaku, potatoes, skewers of beef tendon, deep fried tofu (not in picture), chikuwa (fish suasage)
Hubbie came home with a bad cold last night so he quickly ate and slept early. He took the day off today, hope he recovers soon. Poor him.

Poor him.

I've posted an entry about some really delicious omlette rice I had in Kyoto. But I've never tried making it at home.
Today I attempted making this very easy looking but actually difficult dish.
¡¡
¡¡
They all look pretty ugly? Yes, but you have to see the improvement on each attempt!!! (click to see the pictures in bigger size if you must)
On my first attempt, I couldn't even get the egg on the rice properly. Then I managed to get it on the rice but couldn't flip it inside out with the raw side facing down. My 3rd attempt turned out perfect. Got the egg over the rice and actually had it turned inside out!!!
Next time I'll try to make it into the oval shape of a real omlette rice instead of just this round thing. Or maybe eventually wrapping the whole thing in the fry pan!!!

I tried to make Minrin's green tea red bean bread this morning. Since I didn't have green tea sheet at home I made it from the chocolate bread recipe and substituded the chocolate powder with green tea powder. It turned out pretty okay actually, but I guess I need to leave it in the fridge longer to make it firmer before rolling it out.
And the red bean I only boiled it with sweetened water.
This time I was sorta in a hurry (cooking lunch at the same time) so they turned out a bit ugly. When I was folding the dough, I didn't let it rest enough so it got too tough I couldn't roll it out into a longer stick before I cut it into 12 small pieces. And I was too greedy. Should have made it 8 instead of 12 so that each could be a bit thicker...
But all in all, the taste is pretty ok. Both hubby and my friend liked it a lot.
Will make it again until they turn out like ones sold at bakeries out there!!!!
