Been stocking up with cookies.

And today, I finally had time to bake some madeleines to complete the package.

We are heading to hubby's parents' place for new year tomorrow. Usually we'd buy some cookies or sweets along, but this year I decided to bring some handmade cookies. So I put together this box of 5 kinds of sweets. Hope they'll like it.

I don't usually buy these sweets stuffs from souvenirs shops, but this box of tea flavored cakes caught my eyes.

I got them not because I needed to give them to someone, but I wanted to see how to make it. So this was really a sample.

It's not cheap, 1050yen (Cdn10.50) for 6 tiny little sticks. But now I know it's not difficult to make them. And the tea flavor goes well with it.

It's common to see cakes flavored with western tea such as earl grey, or even green tea. But it's not common to see "sencha" and hojicha". I think it's a pretty good idea.

Will try making them next time. (^^)b

Haven't made any cakes for a while. Finally managed to make a strawberry cake today.

Actually hubby loves strawberry cake (don't know why). I suggested chocolate strawberry cake but he wanted a plain one so here it is. (^^)

It's been a while since I last made any real cakes. And I really need to practice on handling fresh cream. Fruits cake like this is really the basic of everything so I recalled a lot of basic skills today.

But I still made the cream a bit too stiff for the decoration part. (I always do, either too soft or too stiff). It's really not easy so I think I should practice more from now on.

Since I don't have any pistachio at home it turned out to be a very plain strawberry cake. So maybe I'll just sprinkle some icing sugar on top of th strawberry before eating (cuz' it'd melt) to make it look better.

Hope hubby will like it.

A bit behind schedule but I finally managed to make 4 types of cookies. Initially I wanted to send them to my parents but now that the postal service is so busy I don't want to risk my package. Good that cookies do keep for a while so I'll just send them over later on.

These 4 types of cookies are all very delicious. Green tea, earl grey, chocolate and plain flavor. Hubby loves green tea and plain cookies and I myself like green tea and chocolate.

Maybe I'll add more to them when I have time before going to Fukuoka for new year.

Merry Christmas everybody!!!!

It was actually our 2nd anniversary yesterday. Since my friends are in town the 4 of us went to Kyoto for the day.

Went to the monkey park in Arashiyama and had a blast. When we were told there are about 160 monkeys up at the mountain we were a bit scared. Heard monkeys are pretty aggressive so we took our caution.

The first monkey we encountered was on our way up to the top of the hill. While we were looking up for monkeys up the hill, all the sudden we saw one sitting right on the road less than 2 meters away from us. But it's just us who were chicken. The monkeys are so used to people they don't even care much about us.

When we got to the top of the mountain there is a resting shelter. We bought some chestnuts to feed them with. All the monkeys sitting by the windows outside the the wired net stretched their arms to get their food from the visitors.

Smaller and weaker monkeys get yelled at by the bigger monkeys and couldn't stay long enough to get their food. But we still managed to give some to the smaller ones.

Just so happened it was feeding time at 12:30pm and we saw how fast the food disappeared within seconds.

We saw one monkey running away with 3 mikan (Japanese mandarin oranges) in his hands. It was too funny we all laughed our heads off.

The baby monkeys are really cute so I tried to take some pictures. 2 of them turned out quite goo. The mother tried to pull it away when she saw my camera getting so close to the baby but he didn't seem to mind much.

Didn't have time and energy to make any bread over the past 2 weeks. But now that my temp. part time job is over life is back to normal. So I started baking some bread right after I got home from work last night.

Since I had half of a maple sheet left sitting in the fridge I made some maple bread again. But this time I took Minrin's idea and added some earl grey powder to the dough making it earl grey maple bread.

The folding part went well so the layers of the bread turned out pretty nice. Taste was good too. Hubby liked it a lot. So we can have bread for breakfast again after 2 weeks of Japanese style (rice) breakfast. (^^)

It's been more than one year since I last made any cream puffs. Today, I was planning to bake some cookies to begin with but then later switched to making cream puffs.

20061218creamPuff.jpg 20061218233126.jpg

Things are so much easier with a mixer. I still remember the last time I made it at home, I had to mix the dough with my hand whisk and it was just very tiring.

Instead of just custard cream I made the filling a little lighter with diplomat cream (half fresh cream and half custard cream). And I added a little bit of rum to strengthen the flavor.

Turned out perfect! Hubby "ordered" 2 but finished it in 2 minutes and wanted more. Of course I didn't make additional cuz' it was already 11:30 at night.

20061218233138.jpg

Guess I'd better prepare at least 5 for him tomorrow. haahaaa

Been busy with hubby's applications to grad schools this past couple months. Glad that it's almost over and we can finally relax a bit.

In appreciation to all the help and advices from hubby's former professor, we set up a small dinner gathering in Kyoto.

Since it's a semi formal dinner plan we did some research and finally decided to have chanko nabe (sumo hot pot), thinking it would be good for a cold day in Kyoto.

Jin No Hana is almost a heritage maison. I don't remember exactly but it's more than 70 years old. The building itself is very Japanese and the severs there are not teenagers you'd see at most restaurants. I especially like the Kyoto dialact they speak there.

Just so happened hubby got his first acceptance mail in that morning he was able to share that good news with professor O. In our private room overlooking kamogawa, the four of us (with professor O's wife as well) had a good time enjoying the good food while chatting away about hubby's student life.

This restaurant is very traditional and it feels like a ryokan. The quality of the food was great though the quantity may not be very filling. However, the entire package adds up to be worth it. Rather than a party place, I think it's a good idea to bring foreign friends there to feel the culture and the services.

A friend just came back from Bulgaria after 2 years of volunteering work. We met up at Umeda and decided to sit down somewhere to catch up a bit.

We went to TACY CAFE in E-ma. It's a rare cafe that is all non-smoking (cuz' it's in an open area of the shopping mall).

I like their menu with a variety of drinks from different places. Some are their originals. Presentation is beautiful and cakes are not bad.

I had a chocolate roll cake and Lychee milk tea that serves with blueberry jam. Interesting enough, blue berry jam goes well with tea as sweetener! Though I couldn't taste nor smell any lychee.

The only complain I would have is the temperature. Since it's right next to the street level entrance to the mall, it gets pretty cold in the winter. So it's better to pick a tabel away from the entrance.

There is nothing more simple than this.

20061217YamaimowitCheese.jpg

Simply cut the yamaimo into thick slices, top up with a small slice of cheese, grill in the fish griller, oven, or even just fry pan. Sprinkle salt to flavor when cheese is slightly brown.

The texture of the cheese and the crispiness of the imo matches so well you'd be surprised! And it goes well with beer!!! (^^)b

Been talking about baking cookies for the longest time. Finally took action and baked some green tea "ponporone". (ingridients: butter, icing sugar, almond powder, flour, green tea powder. Nice and simple!)

Since it was my first time baking it I separated them into 2 parts to test out the differences. Turned out the 2nd half was perfect but the first half was just so so. But when I came home from a tea break with a friend, 1/3 of the first half was gone!

Hubby seemed to like it a lot and managed to munch on them non stop!!! (^^;;

Now I have to start thinking what to bake next to put together a nicer package as Christmas gifts.

My friend woke me up with a mail to my cell phone. When I looked at the alarm it was already noon. (^^;;

My friend invited me to have lunch together and I quickly said yes. Haven't seen her for a couple weeks and I need to bring her her eye glasses that she left at my place last time.

We went to NU in Umeda. It's a shopping center with expensive shops. This restaurant we went to is on the 9th floor.

The interior was pretty cozy. We picked the counter seats facing outside by the window.

I ordered a dish (forgot the name) that was seared fish lined on a bed of vegetables and mushrooms in soup. It was then covered by foil and baked in the oven before serving. The herb used made it smell so wonderful and the soup was delicious. Very good lunch especially on a cold day like today.

My friend ordered a galette (savory crepe) with tuna, egg, and salad. It was very delicious too.

The lunch at this place include a "bread buffet" and free drink of your choice. Prices range between 950-1500yen. And there are side dishes and desserts that you can add at 300yen.

We ordered dessert but those I wouldn't mention much cuz' they were soso. But good for the 300yen.

20061217000925.jpg 20061217000930.jpg

Don't know how good it is at night but I guess at least it gives you a pretty nice and romantic atmosphere.

It was a good lunch. Enjoyed it very much.

Will post pictures of the food when I get my desktop back from the shop.

My friend from my former company called and we chatted for a while. Since I came home at around 6 after my part time job, it was already quite late when I hung up.

So I had too little time to prepare dinner. In that case, simple "donburi" would be the best bet. And so I tried to make "oyakodon" (chicken and egg rice) for the first time.

It looked pretty yucky but the taste was pretty ok.

But let me get back to the topic on eggs.

When I went to shop for egg the other day, the one I usually buy was out of stock so I got these expensive eggs for the first time. 8 for 242yen (2.42Cdn). These are called "matamago (real eggs)". A bit pricy but I was curious how different it would taste.

So I compared it with the cheap egg I have left in the fridge. Wow, the yolk of the "real tamago"(right side of picture) is so much bigger! And the size of everything was bigger.

According to my text book, egg yolks are about 20g and they don't differ that much. The only things that differs more is the size of the egg white. In Japan, they measure eggs and give them sizes. Usually we buy "M" (medium) eggs from the supermarkets. But then there are also some L or LL eggs available somewhere.

So I can say the cheap egg is actually a S (small) and since it's not really that much cheaper, I think the expensive eggs don't turn out to be that much more expensive afterall.

All the sudden I remember the "free range eggs" I bought when I made birthday cake for Wor in Vancouver. The price of the eggs were more than double the price of any regular eggs. And that was the first time that I noticed these things do matter even in North America.

And when we had brunch up at Whistler, the menu marked "with free range eggs" to show the superiority of their ingridients.

So it's not just Japanese who would brand their eggs, the same thing happens elsewhere too! Interesting!!!

Look what I've got! A "otokomae tofu" magnet!
They've started 2 series of these gashapon collectibles. Well not that I will collect all of them, but I Just felt like getting one.

When the little "egg" came out of the machine it turned out to be "kyoto Jonny". The one I actually wanted was the real "otokomae tofu" magnet (one shown on the far right of the list).

But I guess 1 tofu magnet is enough on the fridge. heehee

On my way home after my haircut, I went to check out the food floor of a department store in Umeda.

Happened to see these small crabs on sale. Instead of 3 for 1050yen, it's 4 for 1050yen today. Works out pretty ok so I gave it a try.

So this is my very first home made crab miso soup! Simply cut a crab into 2 pieces and boil it with water. Add miso before serving and flavor it with some spring onion. Simple but good enough.

These crabs don't give you much to eat with but it gives soup a wonderful flavor. Perfect soup for a sunny winter day. =)

What a good day today. (^^)b

I am back to my old habit again. Trying out new things.

Saw this vegetable called nabana in the supermarket. My first time seeing it so I was tempted to try it. Since it was on special for only 100yen I gave it a try.

Turned out it's pretty alright. Texture is in between "choi sum" and "gai lan". A bit crispy but yet a bit firm. There is no special smell or strong flavor to it so it's pretty suitable for simple stir fry.

I only stir fried it with some dried shrimps, chilli pepper, salt and pepper. Simple but I think it was pretty good.

You know the bonito flakes you see dancing on top of "agedashi tofu" and other Japanese dish is actually from something like this?

20061209Katsuo01.jpg

Katsuo (bonito) bushi is a block of fish fillet fermented and smoked. Usually we can see bags of shaved flakes at the store but in Japan we can find a whole block of it at certain places.

These 2 blocks of katsuo bushi is for my brother in law. I don't know if he's still eating it but he said it's good for health so he eats a little bit of it everyday. I thought it would taste better to shave it when he eats it so I got him a whole block just for fun.

Well, the guy at the katsuo shop told me it's actually better to pick katsuo made from the fillet of the back of the fish. It contains less fat and is supposed to taste better. So you can ask if it's from the tummy or from the back to judge which one you want. But of course prices are the same.

I actually use quite a bit of katsuo bushi at home when I make soup stock. And I realized good katsuo really gives a clearer and better soup.

100g of katsu makes about 10 litre of soup stock depends how much you put in. I usually put a lot of katsuo to make it smell really strong. Then use the same thing to make 2ban dashi (boiling it another time for more soup stock).

But now that we have 2 of these katsuo blocks, maybe I'd have to buy a shaver for him too. It's about 10,000yen (Cdn$100) for one.

It's been a while since I last bought any Japanse sweets. Yesterday we went to get my father in law some birthday presents and happened to see this chestnut daifuku.

Some of you know I'm a chestnut freak. So I immediately asked hubby to pay for it. 3 daifuku for 630yen, pretty pricy, but it's Taneya, can't really complain.

I had so many Japanese sweets last year I really got sick of the red bean paste thing. That's why I haven't touched any Japanese sweets for months. But this one has an entire chestnut in it so it's a different story. (^^)b

Fresh daifuku don't last long (only 1 or 2 days) so we ate them after we got home. The texture of the "skin" was made from real sticky rice so it's not smooth like what you usually see. But of course they mixed it with sticky rice powder as well so it's actually a good mix. Slight firm and yet smooth and soft.

Oh and the red bean filling was not too sweet, just how I liked it. And the best part was of course the chestnut wrapped by red bean paste. heehee YUM!

But I still miss the sweet potato daifuku I had last year. I got it from Kintetsu department store but since it was limited production it's not available all year round. I don't think I can ever run into another delicious daifuku like that anymore.......ahhh, miss it so much.

I almost forgot I used to drink "red dates water" everyday when I was in Hong Kong.

20061209RedDates01.jpg 20061209RedDates02.jpg

I have always been told that I need to drink this often to keep my blood circulation well. And that my stomach is not that strong I need to adjust to it accordingly. (This drink fills your stomach in a way if you drink it too often)

I've forgotten about all these lately. Then the other day, I complained to my friend that I have a gas problem and slight headache everyday. Feels like a cold but it's actually nothing. She called my Chinese doctor for me (we go to the same doctor) and reminded me of this drink.

Well, my parents asked me to put jelly ear fungus and wolfberries to it so this is actually a revised version of red dates drink.

Drank it for a couple days, gas problem is gone and I'm feeling much warmer.

Now I have to remember to make this often enough to stay healthy at least.

Ran out of bread and was too lazy to make fancy stuffs yesterday. So I made this loaf of rasin bread. But to my surprise, it turned out very soft and delicious this time.

Well I did change the recipe a bit. Used brown sugar instead of white sugar, used more butter than usual and soaked the rasins beforehand. Is that why? Or maybe it's the new flour that I'm using.

I started using it a couple weeks back but then it's always been flavored bread so I didn't really get to taste the real flavor of this flour. Now I know why the other shoppers said this flour is delicious!

I used to think it's really too fancy to use different flour for different breads. At some bakeries in Japan, they use more than 20 or 30 kinds of flours to make the wide variety of breads in the store. But I am starting to see the reasons now.

Bread is just an interesting thing!
