Made an apple pie today.

20070227215428.jpg

Japanese fuji apples are great as fruit but it's not suitable for dessert making. No matter how long you simmer it it still won't give you a paste. That's why people usually use 2 different kinds of apples to mix the flavor and texture. Since I only had 2 fuji apple at home I used them anyway.

Turned out alright but the color was a bit light. Taste wise, I added some cinnamon powder and rasin to make it more complicated.

Went out with my friend the other day for some Thai food. This time we went to TAWAN THAI in the Minami-Senba area (walking distance from Shinsaibashi). It's about 5 minutes away from Tokyo Hands, pretty well located.

Food wise it was fairly ok. Not as good as SWEET BASIL but considering the location and other factors it's a pretty good choice.

They serve steamed spring roll. That wuold probably the only dish that I didn't like very much. When it's deep fried or raw, it doesn't affect the flavor much. But when it's steamed, the wrapping is a bit too chewy and yet flavorless. Without the dip it would be quite tasteless. Maybe the reason I didn't like it is the fact that they use ready made sweet sauce rather than their own original sauce. Made it less creative.

Other than that, deep fried bread with pork was alright. And the soup and pork green curry was good too.

Overall I'd say it was a good experience. But lacking surprises.

I saw on TV there is a new tempura bar in the Tenma Market Place. Looked pretty cool so I went to try it out last night.

It's a small and cozy place. Very clean cuz' it's still new and given it's a standing bar (no chair provided), it's pretty cute (unlike the regular standing bars where only lonely guys in their 40's or 50's would go to).

The menu was alright too. 300yen you get a good selection from cheese to tiny shirmps to duck balls. We tried a few things and all of them were pretty good. And you can sprinkle a pinch of imported salt from France, Italy...etc. to touch up the taste.

As for sake, they only provide sake, no shochu. Other than that there's also beer and plum wine. All drinks are paid in advance and food is charged when you leave.

Overall it's pretty nice. Except it was a bit cold last night our feet all got frozen after standing for a couple hours. (^^;;

Other than tempura there are also a few sashimi, soups and other items to choose from. But it's a bar afterall so don't expect to get filled at this place.

Since I opened a can of chestnut cream for making chocolate yesterday. I used it up for 2 chestnut rolls.

I added some fresh cream and chestnut cream into the mixture when I made the sponge, so it turned out much softer than usual. And of course chestnut cream was also added to the fresh cream for the filling.

The chestnut in the roll are only instant snacks from the convenient store. It's not as sweet as the imported chestnut from France and I found it balances well with the whole thing.

Hubby loved it and finished eating the whole thing within minutes.

One more roll left in the fridge. It'll probably disappear within tomorrow. (^^)b

Made some yomogi red bean bread yesterday. This time not with sweet red bean paste filling, rather, I folded in some boiled red bean (slightly sweetened) and topped it with black sesame seeds.

Hubby doesn't like loaves very much. Whenever there is a choice, he'd go for the smaller version. So this time I made both as well.

Just now I realized he ate all of the small ones but didn't touch the loaf. hahahaha same flavor, but the loaf just didn't appeal to him at all.

Guys are just lazy aren't they?! (^^;;

Chinese new year is over but I somehow managed to make this dish at home.

Stew(?) sea cucumber with prawn eggs.

Personally I'm not a big fan of sea cucumber. But since it's really good source of collagen and I got a few dried ones from my parents I tried to make it yesterday.

Actually it takes days to prepare. It takes about 4 days to soak it and then another day to boil and cover overnight.
I am sure there are other ways of making it, but this is how I did it.

But all in all, I think it turned out alright. Except the white spring onion took away the flavor of the prawn eggs. It's good to be by itself afterall.

Found a funny recipe about cooking French / Japanese fusion at home. Tried it with the available ingredients and it turned out probably 60% similar to the original.

Well...presentation was ok, but the taste was just so-so. Nothing that I'd want to try making again. I wonder whether it's my problem or the recipe itself.

Hmm....chicken with egg plant...maybe I can think of some better combination?

Stepping into the "golden pig year", I said to myself I've to work harder even at home.

So I tried making 2 things experimentally. My final goal is to know how to make things from scratch without any recipe. (^^)b

Anyway, I made 2 things yesterday. First thing was some sausage buns (forgot to take pictures). This time I added some black sesame seeds and cheese to the dough, as for the filling, I added some mini tomato and cream cheese to try out a new combination. All turned out quite good.

Second thing I made yesterday was pound cake. I am not that into eating pound cake but then I actually like ones with lots of liqueur in it.

So based on the very basic concept of 1:1:1:1 of butter, sugar, egg and flour, I added some orange peel and lots of Grand Marnier to the mixture. Hoping it would make me drunk.

But turned out only so-so. I can still taste a bit of the Grand Marnier but definitely not enough to get me drunk. And I need to put at least 3 times more of the orange peel to enhance the orange flavor.

Next time, I'll do that. And to touch up with some liqueur syrup when it's fresh out of the oven. (^^)b

But the first thing is to finish eating these 2 cakes sitting on the table... (^^;;

It was also my close friend's birthday yesterday. So we had a mini party at our place.

I made a strawberry cake for this special occasion. But then of course, I tried to decorate it a bit different from last time. What do you think? Looks ok this time?

As for dinner, I made "oden" since it was a bit cold. Also, I got some interesting ideas for making "kinchaku" (deep fried tofu skin pockets with stuffings) the other day and wanted to try them out.

Last night I made 2 different kinds of "kinchaku":
1. cream cheese with mini tomato
2. chopped green onion with egg yolk

Both turned out pretty nicely. (^^)v

So we had a whole cake, oden, chinese new year pudding, along with lots of beer and alcohol. Funny combination but the point is just to enjoy whatever food we liked.

Did you know that Osaka is also known as a place where you "eat till you drop"? Well, living in a city with this name, it'd be a shame to not live like that don't you think?! heehee

It was Chinese New Year yesterday. Not too much happening here in Japan. But I'm sure people are having a blast in areas with more Chinese people.

Thanks to my friends S & B's thoughtfulness, we are able to enjoy some delicious Hong Kong style Chinese New Year Cake (pudding) on this special day!

20070219105242.jpg

Chinese new year cake is similar to Japanese mochi, except it's not as chewy. But both made from sticky rice.

Unlike Japanese mochi, it's made with flavor. Usually sweetened in Hong Kong, but in some areas of China it's made with other ingredients making it savory.

It comes in a big round block like cheese. Before eating, you can simiply cut it into slices and fry in a little oil to soften it. It's also popular to finish with a touch of egg (dip in egg and fry again).

20070219105252.jpg 20070219105310.jpg 20070219105320.jpg

Thanks S & B!! They are delicious!!!! (^^)/

Bought this tiny little 15cm chiffon cake mold today. So here it is, my very first chiffon cake! I made it ceylon tea flavor with the tea bags I got from my friend M.

I still remember my neighbour in Vancouver used to bake us banana chiffon cake all the time. It was really delicious. Maybe I can try to make her some of my own when I go see her next time. =)

Come to think of it, chiffon cake doesn't involve any butter so it's supposed to be healthier than sponge cake. Maybe I should make it more often. (^^)b

Chef's Special burger at MOS burger has always been a mystery to me.

The fact that it take 15 minutes to make and the limited availablity at MOS with green signs really tickled my mind.

They used to have this "takumi" (Chef's special) burger with avocado, but now there is only 1 regular takumi burger and you can choose to add cheese to it.

I finally got to try it. After a long 15 minute wait, my "takumi" cheese burger came along with 2 different kinds of sauce that you can eat it with (I didn't like either of them). And all that I can tell you is the buns are different, and the meat used is of higher quality.

If you clicked to look at the website, you can see clearly how the buns are like slices of bread from a round loaf. Indeed, they are. And the patty is much thicker and juicier than the regular ones used on other burgers.

Hubby had one bite and said the foccacia I made the other day was better. (No kidding, the steak itself cost like over 1000yen!)

I think the price is reasonable considering the quality of the ingredients used. But it's not something that I'd try twice.

Valentine's day in Japan is a really wicked marketing tool. Other than giving chocolate to the ones you love, you're obligated to give to those you interact with at work. So the chocolate sales amount goes sky high this month. Since I'm not working, I only have to give chocolate to my husband and my father and brother in law. Those who are working...probably had to pitch in to buy bulk for their male co-workers.

Anyway, it's fun to look around though. There are all kinds of beautifully made chocolate products out there. I couldn't beat the crowd so I didn't any but I was really caught by the new Japanese chocolate with "shochu" (Japanese liquer).

Last year I spent 2 hours looking around and finally ordered chocolate for my in laws. But this year I made an order through the internet to save some sweat.

As for hubby, this is what I got him.

20070207JackDaniels.jpg

Yeah, just some ordinary imported chocolate from SONY Plaza. But he was really happy to get it (he LOVES whiskey).

It's not like very classy chocolate but it did serve my purpose. 20070214160707.jpg

Look at the amount of Jack Daniel's inside. Enough to get you drunk. heehee

The picture of the Japanese style spagetti I posted yesterday is something I made a while back. Since it didn't turn out very nicely I made tried making again this afternoon.

This time I changed the ingredient a little bit and it turned out very well!!! (^^)b

Ingredient:Spagetti portion for 2
bacon 2 slices
garlic 2 cloves (finely chopped)
salad spinach 100g
shimeji mushroom half(approx. 40g?)

soup base:
konbu katsuo dashi soup stock 320ml
soy sauce 40ml
mirin 40ml
(just mix them together)

How to make it:
1. Boil pasta in big pot with lots of water, some oil and salt
2. Chop garlic, cut bacon and spinach into appropriate size
3. Fry garlic for 2 to 3 minutes, remove from fry pan to avoid burning. Set aside for later use
4. Fry bacon, shimeji mushroom until mushroom is slightly softened.
5. Pour soup stock mixture into fry pan, bring to a boil
6. Add spinach and garlic. Bring to boil again.
7. Place boiled spagetti on a deep pasta plate, top with bacon, shimeji mushroon and spinach toppings. Pour soup into dish from the side.

Simple eh?! (^^)b

When we met my blog friends Reiko and Ryoricho in Fukuoka back in January, Ryoricho taught me how to make Japanese styled spagetti.

Just so happened I had shimeji mushroom and spinach at home, I added a bit of onion and tried making this vegetarin spagetti the other day.

Turned out ok...but I think the biggest mistake I made was using the garlic liquer I made. The flavor was too strong, taking away the natural flavor of the soup stock and the vegetables themselves.

Learnt a lesson so next time I will make it simple.

This time was a success for real!

The last couple times I put the beans into the tough while it's still mixing. But then I checked out some books at the bookstore and found out I'm supposed to fold in the beans after the dough is ready.

So here it is!!!! Exactly like the ones I used to buy from the bakery!!! Yum!!!!

Baked carrot bread again yesterday. But then I realized I haven't really used the muffin mold my parents' got me so I used it for the first time making some cup bread.

Looks like little muffins eh? (^^)b

This time I topped them with icing sugar before baking so it gives a bit shine and sweetness to the buns. Turned out pretty alright.

A slight change of the presentation made them more appealing than a regular loaf. Hubby ate more than usual this morning.

Look counts afterall...

The weather is really warm this year.
It already feels like Spring in Japan.

Speaking of spring, it's strawberry season in Japan. When I went to the department store the other day I saw all kinds of expensive fruits.

Among all I saw one strawberry that costs 420yen ($4.20CND) for just ONE!!!!

Too expensive!!! But was a bit tempted to buy just ONE. heehee

Then I overheard somebody saying "Asuka Ruby is on special for only 600yen today!"

Of course I have no idea what Asuka Ruby is, but the strawberries themself looked pretty nice. And hubby got me a pack of them.

They are huge!!! Almost the size of my palm! And quite sweet indeed.

Just in case you didn't know, there are different types of strawberries in Japan. And since some of them are too big or the color of the inside don't look perfect for decoration purposes, not all of them are suitable for cake and dessert making. (^^)b

Anyway, this was probably the most expensive strawberry I've had so far.
