My first time planting herb. Well, it's nothing like planting them from seeds but it's fun enough!
You see so many of them on sale this time of the year making you want to be part of the party.
Actually it's much cheaper to grow your own than to buy them from the supermarket. Plus they taste much better when cut fresh before cooking. So this is my first attempt, see how it goes!

My first mission is to keep them alive!

The little flowers of thyme are really cute!

Oregano may not look very pretty, but it smells great! And Greek oregano is the must have in any kitchen (based on a book that I read).

Went to Finale last week with 2 friends.
It's a pretty famous bakery with a few shops in MA. We went to the one in Cambridge and tried a few things.

This cooking class was great too.

Though I didn't like the instructor as much as the other one with whom I took French cooking class with, I did learn something new. Especially working with pork loin. It's easy but you really don't do that at home until you have the chance to experience it somewhere.

Gourmet at home is not too difficult. But better when done with friends. =)

ÃÂÀ¸Æü / Birthday

2008 - 06/25 [Wed] - 12:37

Last year I spent my birthday driving a big U-Haul truck moving furnitures into our apartment.

This year I spent my birthday...

waiting for Comcast,
doing laundry,
going to the post office,
grocery shopping,
cooking,
cutting my husband's hair,
and cutting my own finger (I got distracted talking while cutting hubby's hair)...

It was another peaceful and ordinary day. Another great birthday!

Hubby bought me some flowers when he came back from the library after midnight last night.

558095791603_0_ALB[1]

And I also got a lot of very sweet and heart warming birthday wishes, presents from my friends and family. Thank you so very much!

Comcast

2008 - 06/25 [Wed] - 07:54

Our Internet service was disconnected over the past couple days.
It was inconvenient but since I didn't get glue to the computer all day long I was much more productive than usual.

The reason why I got disconnected was simple, our one year discounted deal with Comcast was over so I cancelled my account and ordered a new bundle deal under my husband's name. With this, we can enjoy another 12 months of discounted bundle service of high speed Internet and digital cable TV for just $66/month instead of $125/month.

Not the best of the deal, but I am pretty pleased with the 60 dollars saving. =)

Glad that I'm reconnected, on my birthday! =)

¤Ê¤ó¤È¤¤¤¦¹ñ¤À¡¦¡¦¡¦¡©¡¡/ Who made the young Japanese think this way??

2008 - 06/19 [Thu] - 05:06

My husband forwarded me this article.

It's in Japanese but in general it says based on a recent survey conducted through cell phones. The Z generation (age 15-22) in Japan voted on occupations they want to take part in. The scary result shows male/female club companions as high as the 9th place out of the 30 choice provided!

I don't want to say much about my complicated feelings about this low moral among the younger generations but this probably is not their fault. Who actually made them think it's perfectly acceptable to sell their body and laughters for money?

We all know the answer.

Lazy me used the smoke salmon I have at home to put together this sandwich.
Freshly baked bread is super soft!!

What's inside: veggie (lettuce would work fine), smoke salmon, onion, capers, lemon (optional), salt, pepper and butter.

Easy easy easy. Can't call it home cooking can I?

I've always loved Yoplait original yogurt. Especially strawberry flavor!
They are so popular you can even find them in Hong Kong!

756069931603_0_ALB[1]

But I must tell you Japanese yogurt is really good too. Especially Aloe yogurt from Morinaga.
Well, Japanese dairy products generally taste better anyway.

As you may know, the Latino population is big in the US. There are many fun products for them and this is one of them.

Latino yogurt!
859769931603_0_ALB[1]

Guess they take tropical fruits as part of the Latino thing.

Not as good as Yoplait though.

Used the maccha powder and cinnamon I have at home to make these 2 kinds of minis.

Not the best of shapes but I think they are acceptable. =)

Good for a change. Hubby is all excited about them. So cute.

I just had some grape tomatoes this morning...
Guess I would stop buying for the time being.
No wonder Shaw's had this 2 for 1 special the other day...

774080600603_0_ALB[1]

McDonald's Corp. and other restaurant chains are pulling certain tomatoes from their products until they learn the source of a recent spate of salmonella cases.

Since mid-April, 145 cases of a type of salmonella known as "Saintpaul" have been reported around the country, including at least 23 hospitalizations, according to the Food and Drug Administration. The illnesses have been linked to certain kinds of uncooked tomatoes, but the source of those tomatoes hasn't yet been identified. (See the FDA notice.)

McDonald's, the country's largest restaurant chain, has stopped serving sliced tomatoes on all of its sandwiches in the U.S. until the source of the salmonella is known, a spokeswoman said. "This is a precautionary measure only," the spokeswoman said. The chain will continue to serve grape tomatoes in its salads, however, because no problems have been linked to that variety....

The FDA is recommending that consumers not eat raw red Roma, raw red plum, and raw red round tomatoes harvested from certain states. Cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes, and tomatoes sold with the vine still attached are safe, the FDA says. Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in young children, frail or elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems.

¥Ü¥¹¥È¥ó¤Ç¤ÎÄÂÂߥޥ󥷥ç¥ó¾õ¶· / Apartments in Boston

2008 - 06/07 [Sat] - 13:29

I was chatting with my classmates at the cooking class yesterday and somehow ended up talking about problems with our apartments.

4 out of 6 people said they have problem with rats and insects in their apartments. I guess we've been really lucky since our apartment has not given us any headache with such problems.

Boston is a really old town and most buildings date back to pre-war. It's only natural that you'd find some flaws in them (such as rats living in the walls...). When looking for a place in Boston, look for newer buildings if possible. And screen doors and windows help shut out bugs.

I personally rejected brown stones cuz' they usually lack elevators. And a lot of them have thin walls and old wood flooring so you can sometimes picture yourself in a horror movie.

Try to use local real estate agents instead of Japanese ones cuz' the local agents usually have better contacts with the bigger management offices.

French cooking ... cont'd

2008 - 06/06 [Fri] - 14:02

Today was the last sesson of the French cooking class I've been to.
It was a wonderful night with lots of good food and wine.
Boy, I'm going to the gym tomorrow to burn some calories. =)

Today's menu:

Today's wine:
This table wine was pretty good. Cute label isn't it? Very French.

Ferrero Rondnoir

2008 - 06/05 [Thu] - 02:36

I came across this new version of Ferrero chocolate at CVS.

Ferrero Rondnoir (dark chocolate!)
390989931603_0_ALB[1]

Since Ferrero Rocher is one of my favorite snacks. I've just gotta check it out. (I know, people in Hong Kong overly use Ferrero Rocher as a new year gift and I sometimes think it's boring just looking at the package. But I still crave it once in a while.)

This is how it looks like.

384099931603_0_ALB[1]

I was curious whether it was the same except changing it to dark choclate.
But the answer is NO.

The outside is not crushed hazelnut and there is NO whole hazelnut in the middle.

As the description reads:

"Rondnoir chocolates are a unique combination of a dark chocolate cream surrounding a "black pearl" of fine dark chocolate, within a delicate, crisp wafer...topped with crunchy dark chocolate morsels."

Personal opinion? It's good quality dark chocolate that allows you to taste it in different textures. Better think of it as a different product than to compare it with the original. Hmmm...how about defining it as a truffle with a wafer coating?

Perhaps my biased preference for hazelnut and nutella is rooted in my taste bud. All in all I think my hand would still reach out for Rocher rather than Rondnoir.

French cooking with wine and spirit

2008 - 06/03 [Tue] - 02:29

Went to take a French cooking lesson at an adult learning center in downtown.

The main purpose? Well, to meet some people and have some good food and wine at the same time.

The course is called "French cooking with wine and spirit". I didn't expect much from it but it turned out to be quite worth the money. It's a 3 week course and every time we get to do a little bit of cutting and chatting while the chef cooks and explain things to us.

The first lesson we had Normandy mussles in cream sauce (with cider), Parisian gnocchi, coq au vin (stewed chicken leg in red wine), and red wine poached pear with ice-cream.

Last week we had warm oysters, , , .
