Lexington, MA

この前Lexingtonを通りかかってプチ観光しました。
アメリカの歴史に興味が無ければ別に面白くないでしょうけど・・・ここはアメリカ独立戦争の最初の銃声が放たれた場所として知られています。

The town of Lexington is famous for being the site of the opening shots of the American Revolution, in the Battle of Lexington on April 19, 1775.

It's about an hour drive from Boston. We went to a friend's party in Bedford and had time to drive by Lexington on our way home. If you're not interested in American history it's not that big of a tourist attraction.

吉野家 in New York

前回ニューヨークに行ったとき、Time Squareにある吉野家に行ってきました。

雰囲気はこんな感じ・・・

ちょっとMcDonald'sみたい。

牛丼を注文したが、本当に速いスピードでできてました。

外観が良かったが、味は醤油だけで味付けたようなもんで塩辛だった。（＞＜

まぁ安いので、時間が無くてご飯物食べたいときは行ってもいいかな・・・
でも味は期待しないでね。

因みに、この吉野家ではチーズケーキも売ってました。食べなかったけど・・・

イタリアンっぽいgondolaが何故かここにもあって、音楽を聴きながらチョコなどを食べるクルーズだそうです。でも、一人当たり100ドル以上もかかりますのでちょっと高いね。

4th of Julyの日に発砲する大砲（礼砲？）です。

Free Concert and Movies at Hatch Shell--Part Two

Other than free music concerts performed by the Longwood Orchestra, there are also free movies at the Hatch Shell on Friday evenings during the summer.

We went last week and it was such a fun thing to watch movie in an open area.
They played Grease the night we went.

The show started at around 8pm when it started to get a bit darker. And before the show a DJ from WBZ came on stage to talk a bit and gave out some little presents.

Sponsors like Polar drinks and Trader Joe's came to give out free samples.

The people around us were really happy people. They started to sing along and danced along during the movie and it was just so much fun!

That's almost at the ending when they all danced at the graduation Carnival.

最近いったいどこで何をしたというと・・・Grand Canyon編

I did a lot of research and decided to take a plane + helicopter + bus tour to Grand Canyon from Las Vegas.

It was not an easy decision because of the cost and the actual variety of tours you can actually choose to do in 1 day.

At one point I was going to take the pink jeep off road tour around the west rim or red rock areas, but I am glad that I went for the all around grand canyon tour.

This is how we went and what we experienced in Grand Canyon...

We got picked up at around 9am from our Las Vegas hotel to the Boulder City airport.
From there we registered and waited for our mini plane ride over to the South Rim, where the Grand Canyon National Park is located.

The ride to South Rim was itself a scenic ride over the West Rim with a recorded guide of the area. We saw Hoover Dam, Mead Lake, the narrowest part of Grand Canyon, the green and yellow parts of the Colorado River...etc.

Once we got into the South Rim we got a bus ride to the helipot and registered for our next adventure, a 30 minute helicopter ride over the North Rim. People say North Rim is the most beautiful and least visited part of the Grand Canyon.

When they called out my name I found out I was really lucky to be seated in the front beside the pilot and got a magnificiant view of everything!

The North Rim was indeed the most beautiful part of the Grand Canyon. The scene was breath taking and I felt like taking a hike there to take a closer look of the beauty of this place.

After the helicopter ride we had lunch and then followed by a bus tour to the South Rim within the National Park. The weather worsen and started to rain but we were lucky to be able to take some pictures before the rain really started to pour where we were.

The South Rim was really beautiful too. Mostly because we were up close and did not have a glass windows blocking our view. I could walk around forever and take thousands of pictures if I had the time.

It was a very memorable trip and we got to see most of Grand Canyon in less than 1 day.
I was so excited when I boarded the helicopter and thought it would be a bit noisy and not very stable. But it was a very smooth ride and both my husband and myself enjoyed it very much.

At one point during my planning I was going to give up the idea of visiting Grand Canyon because of the cost of this whole thing. But it actually turned out to be the best part of the entire Las Vegas trip.

Being able to see the greatness of the nature was both fascinating and soul calming at the same time. Looking at the rain cloud and the sunshine right by each other, feeling the strength of the wind while trying not to get blown away into the bottom of the canyon was quite some experience.

While I enjoyed my time experiencing Grand Canyon, I found Las Vegas to be a giantic man-made world without the slightest beauty of the nature.

Now I understand why other travellers suggested I should choose to visit South Rim over West. I would tell people the same thing!

If you asked me now which part of the Grand Canyon to pick for a visit, I'd say all 3 if possible. Otherwise, South Rim would be a good pick cuz' it's well developed and easily accessible throughout the year. (though I'd really want to see the Nroth Rim up close someday.)

Free Concert and Movies at Hatch Shell--Part One

ボストンの夏はいつもイベントが沢山。

去年一度も行く機会がなかったHATCH SHELLにはやっと今週行くことができました。

先ずは水曜日のLongwood Symphony Orchestraが演奏するコンサート。

今回は中国の音楽というテーマもあって、最初の一曲目はChina DreamsからのFanfareでした。
そして、今年Foundation for Chinese Performing Arts Concerto Competitionを優勝した今年16歳の中国系カナダ人Wesley Chuの演奏も生で聴くことができました。

このThe Landmarks Festival at the Shellというのは皆の音楽を鑑賞する興味をアップさせるためで始めたものだそうです。Longwood Symphonyのメンバーは皆医療業界の方々で、医者やナースなど、とにかく優秀な人ばっかりです。司会者によると、多くのメンバーが音大を卒業してから医療業界に入ったみたいです。なので、本当に音楽を大好きなエリートだと。

イベント全体の雰囲気は写真の通り、とてもリラックスしたもので、皆早めに着いていい場所をとって芝生に座ってピクニックをしながらエンジョイすることができます。

始まる時間は夜の7時、我々も勿論ピクニック～♪
サラダなどを持って行って、後はスーパーで手羽先を購入した。

6時半前に着いたときまだ前のほうに座ることができたが、7時前になると、芝生はもうほぼいっぱいになりました。
寝転んで音楽を聴くことができるのでとても楽しかったイベントでした。
気が付くと、もう暗くなりました・・・

Living in Boston could be a lot of fun. Especially in the summer.

There are always a lot of events lined up by the city. A lot of them are free.
We went to the Hatch Shell for a free concert the other day.

It's called the Landmarks Festival at the Shell and it's performed by the Longwood Symphony Orchestra. All members of this Orchestra are from the medical industry and a lot of them have a degree in music other than their own medical specializations. (What smart people eh?!)

This free event is aimed to diverse public audiences' appreciation of fine music.

So we could sit down on the grass, have a picnic while we enjoy music--for free. Isn't that great?! Rather than sitting in a concert hall, this is much more relaxing and fun.

The concert is on for many Wednesdays in the summer and the theme of the August 20th concert was Action and Adventure. Since it collaborated with the Foundation for the Chinese Performing Arts, the first piece was a Chinese piece. ("Fanfare" from China Dreams)

And the 16 year old Chinese Canadian Wesley Chu, winner of the 2008 Foundation for the Chinese Performing Arts piano competition, also performed a few pieces.

I don't know very much about music so I guess I fit in really well in the event. heehee

Overall it was a fun and relaxing thing to do. Too bad we were away most of the summer and the event will be over in about 3 weeks before they do it again next summer. I'm glad I didn't miss the fun and went at least once!

トマトの成長記録

旅行に行っていた間に大きくなったトマトの写真です。7つもあります。

小さかったときの写真も撮りたかったですね。。。

何故かあっという間（2週間ぐらい）にこんなに大きく（直径６，７センチぐらいあるでしょうか）なるなんて予想外でした。後は収穫を待つだけですね。（＾＾）ｂ

Broadway shows

この前ニューヨークにいたとき、ゆっくりとミュジカルを見ることができました。

旦那がミュジカルを見るのが初めてなので、見やすい「オペラ座の怪人」を選びました。

他の会場はほとんど写真撮影を禁止されていますが、ここは始まる前と休憩のときは撮影OKだった。
ちょっと会場の様子を撮ってみました。

始まる前、セットが布でカバーされていた

休憩前、シャンダリアが落ちてくるシーンがあったため、休憩時間にゆっくりと元の位置へ・・・

大型ミュジカルのステージ、服装、音楽全てお金かけているので、見るだけで楽しかったね。
旦那も見てよかったと満足。

それ以外、私は一人でXanaduとGypsyも見ました。

偶然ですが、ちょうどXanaduにWhoppi Goldbergが一時の特別出演することになっていて、彼女のステージでの演出を生で見ることができました。

勿論撮影は禁止されていたが、最後にステージを「盗撮」しちゃいました。

さすがに有名人が初演出の晩、マスコミも有名人も観客席に沢山いたみたいです。
終わってから、サインや写真を撮るためにずっと待っていた。

私は一度ホテルに戻ってから再び会場に戻ってやっとWhoppi Goldbergが出てきました。
ものすごく親切でサインや写真のリクエストを答えていた。
私は真正面の写真を撮りたかったけど、電池切れてしまって一番近くに来たときのシャッターチャンスを見逃してしまいました。。。（＞＜

Gypsyも良かったです。歌のうまさに感動した。

New Yorkへ行くときの交通手段

ボストンからニューヨークまで大体車で4時間の距離で、そんなに遠くないです。
自分で運転すること以外の交通手段は大体3種類があります：①長距離バス　②電車　③飛行機

一番安いのは勿論バス。
電車はね、まだ乗ったことが無いけど、3時間ほどで着くと書かれています。利用したことある友達によると、そこまで速くないです。しかも値段は高い。時間帯によって値段が変わりますが、基本的には片道100ドル以上かかります。
飛行機だと単に乗ってる時間が短いですが、チェックイン時間やdelayのリスクなどいろいろ考えると一番時間かかりそうな交通手段ではないかと思います。なので使おうと思ったことがないです。

高速バスといってもいろんなバス会社があって、個人的に知っているのは：
Greyhound
Peter Pan
Fung Wah（片道＄１５)
Mega Bus
Bolt Bus（片道＄１－＄２０）
LimoLiner（片道＄８９）

Fung Wahバスは中国人が経営している会社で予約なしでwalk inベースでチケットを購入することがほとんどです。なので、何時に出発するのがはっきりと決めていないときには使いやすいと思います。
今までFung Wahを何回も利用しました。別に悪いことも無く、時には4時間弱でニューヨークに着くこともあったので結構早いです。（まぁでも人によってはそれが危ないと思うかもしれませんが）

63人乗りのバスは勿論そんなにのびのびな席は期待できませんが・・・

ニューヨークは中華街から出発するので、その場でチケットを買って待てばOK。

今年の4月ぐらいだったかな、Fung Wahと競争するために２つのバス会社がボストン⇔ニューヨークのルートに参戦しました。その一つはBolt Busという会社。
Greyhoundと関係があるようで運転手のトレーニングはGreyhoundがやっているらしいです。
値段も安めで20ドルは超えません。むしろ早く予約を入れた場合は1ドルで乗れる可能性もあるみたいですよ。
まぁ、予約制だし、その場でチケットを購入することができないので、flexibilityといえばやっぱりFungWahが一番かな。
でも、乗ってみたら、結構快適でした。
指定席じゃないため、早めに行って並んだほうがいい席に座ることができます。

ニューヨークの出発駅は32番街と8番街の交差点ですので、有る意味でオフィス街にも近いといえますね。

席はFung Wahより広いので、身長のあるアメリカ人にとってはのびのびできますね。
ただ、シートはそんなにreclineできないので、ほとんど寝れません。

車内インターネット接続できますので、若者にも大人気。
基本的には乗客の年齢層はちょっと若いと感じました。大学生とかが多かったですね。

Fung WahもBolt Busも途中15分ほどの休憩がありますが（無いときもある）、Fung Wahの運転手さんは今まで見た限り必ず出発する前に乗客の人数を数えています。この前BoltBusの運転手さんは適当に数えたとは思いますが、一人の乗客を残して発車しそうだったので危なかったです。
まぁ、乗客も乗客がちゃんと時間通りに戻ってこなかったのが悪かったでしょうが・・・
要するに、一人で乗るときは残されないように気をつけたほうがいいでしょう。

高速バスの中で、一番高級なのはLimoLinerというバス会社でしょう。
初めて友人から聞いたときは高いと思っていました。だって、片道89ドルもかかるもん！
でも実際利用してみたら本当に快適で全く疲れが感じませんでした。
LimoLinerはボストンBackbayにあるヒルトンからニューヨーク54と6番街にあるヒルトンから発着するので、ビジネスマンのご出張のとき利用しやすいと思います。

席は全てレザーシートで、まるで飛行機のビジネスクラス同様。

全部で20人前後しか乗れないので、とてものびのびできます。トイレもとても広くてひれいでした。
車内のサービスとして、ドリンク、スナック、映画などがあります。（勿論インターネットも！）
　　
これも勿論予約制、しかも指定席ですので、前もって予約するのがお勧め。
この前旦那のご家族が遊びに来たときLimoLinerでニューヨークに行きましたが、そのサービスの良さに大満足でした。（＾＾）ｂ

Virgin America Airline

今回の旅行は途中San Francisco→Las Vegasの便はVirgin America Airlineを利用しました。

チェックインするとき行列無かったし（まぁ、まだ本数が少ないのが原因でしたでしょうが）、荷物の制限は他の航空会社の50ポンドじゃなくて70ポンドまでもOKだったし。サービスも雰囲気も全部良くていい体験でした。
announcementをするときのはcasual　friendlyで感じよかったし、笑顔もちゃんとあって他の北米の航空会社とは比べるもんじゃない。

Las Vegasに行く便だったので、運を試しましょうと言われ、乗るとき何人の乗客にサイコロをtossさせた。ある点数を当たったら、機内で利用できるクーポンがもらえます。

旦那がやらせてもらえて、しかもクーポンまで当たりました！（ラッキー！）

クーポンを使ってワインを頂くことに～♪

機内の雰囲気は結構格好良くしています。窓を全て閉まっていて、青／紫の光でおしゃれの雰囲気になっていた。シートも全てレザーシート。ビジネスクラスは白で一般の席は黒とのことでした。
全席自分のテレビシステムがあって、ゲームやチャットもできます。
有料サービスを注文するときはテレビの下にクレジットカードをswipeすればできるのでとても便利です。

安全案内のビデオが面白いアニメのスタイルにしていて新鮮でした。

バージンは他の航空会社とそんなに値段変わらないうえにサービスがいいので、うまくやっていけるでしょうね。

個人的にはまた利用したい航空会社です。（＾＾）ｂ

星五つあげたいぐらいですね。

暫く留守していてやっと家に帰ってきました。

旅行のレポートは後日ゆっくりとさせて頂きます。

先ずは家庭菜園のレポートです。
先日買った水をやってくれるツールは一応ちゃんと働いてくれて、トマトの葉っぱは少し枯れたけど、全てのハーブなど無事で健在です！

しかもトマトが新しく出てきて結構大きくなってきました（写真は今度撮ります）。

買ってよかったです！
